Thinking of Getting an Exotic Pet This Holiday Season? Read This First

Dec 17, 2025

The idea of surprising a loved one with a new pet during the holidays (or getting one for yourself) can be exciting. Hedgehogs, reptiles, parrots, ferrets, and other exotic companions are rising in popularity as families look for animals that are different from the traditional cat or dog. However, exotic pets or any pets should never be spur-of-the-moment gifts. North Powers Animal Hospital in Colorado Springs treats many exotic species, and we want to help you make an informed, thoughtful decision before welcoming one into your home.

Exotic Pets Require Extra Consideration

Exotic pets can be incredibly rewarding companions, but they come with their own set of challenges. Each species has specific environmental, dietary, social, and medical needs that aren’t always well understood by first-time owners. If you’re planning on getting a rabbit, snake, or any other kind of pet, there’s a lot to think about.

What to Know Before Getting an Exotic Pet

  • Do Your Research Thoroughly: Each species is vastly different. A bearded dragon’s needs are nothing like those of a chinchilla or cockatiel. Research housing, humidity levels, diet, temperature control, lifespan, socialization requirements, and veterinary care needs. Don’t rely on general pet store advice. Dig deep into reputable sources or speak directly with a vet who treats exotics. The Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians has some care guides for small mammals that are a great place to start.
  • Understand the Commitment: Some exotic pets, like parrots or tortoises, can live 50 years or more. Certain animal companions need daily attention. Be sure you, or the person you’re adopting for, can provide long-term care.
  • Exotic Pets Are Not Low-Maintenance: There’s a myth that small or nontraditional pets are easier to care for. In reality, exotic pets often require more specialized setups and ongoing observation to prevent illness. Proper lighting, UVB exposure, enclosure cleaning, and diet rotation are essential for many species.
  • Holiday Noise and Activity Can Be Stressful: New pets need time to adjust to their environment, and that can be difficult during the holidays, when homes are often full of guests, noise, and unpredictable schedules. Consider waiting until after the holidays for adoption, or create a quiet, stable area that’s ready for your new pet.
  • Make Sure Veterinary Care Is Accessible: Not all veterinary clinics care for exotic species. Fortunately, North Powers Animal Hospital offers vet care for many exotic pets, including wellness exams, nutrition guidance, and even spay and neuter services for rabbits. Before adopting, check that your chosen species is one we treat, and schedule a post-adoption exam early.
  • Think Twice Before Gifting Exotic Pets to Children: While well-intentioned, giving an exotic pet as a surprise gift (especially to a child) can lead to mismatched expectations and unintended neglect. Instead, involve the whole family in the decision, care plan, and preparation process.
